RESTORATION OF CITIZENSHIP TO JEWISH INDIVIDUALS IN LITHUANIA

Lithuania offers a possibility to restore citizenship to Jewish individuals in Lithuania who were citizens of the Republic of Lithuania or whose ancestors were citizens of the Republic of Lithuania before World War II.

The following individuals have the right to restore their citizenship:

  • A departed person: a person who had citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania before 15 June 1940 or his descendants who before 11 March 1990 left the present territory of the Republic of Lithuania for permanent residence to another state, if their permanent place of residence was not in Lithuania on before 11 March 1990, except the persons who departed from the territory of the Republic of Lithuania to the territory of the former Soviet Union after 15 June 1940.
  • An exiled person: a person who had citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania before 15 June 1940 or his descendants who from 15 June 1940 to 11 March 1990 by the decisions of the authorities or courts of the occupation regimes were forcefully deported from Lithuania for resistance to the occupation regimes, for political, social or origin motives.

Requirements for Descendants:

  • Eligible descendant is child, grandchild, and great-grandchild of the person who had citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania held before 15 June 1940.
  • Proof of descent: The descendant must prove that he/she is a descendant of a Lithuanian citizen who was born before 15 June 1940.

Required documents:

Typically include birth certificates, passports, and other official records demonstrating the Lithuanian citizenship of ancestors. Depending on the situation additional documents could be required. Each document issued by foreign countries and each document certified by a foreign country’s notarial procedure, or an equivalent procedure must be legalized or certified with a certificate (Apostille), unless the international treaties of the Republic of Lithuania or the legal acts of the European Union provide otherwise.

Important Note on Dual Citizenship. Lithuania allows exceptions for dual citizenship under this restoration process, meaning applicants can keep their current citizenship while restoring their Lithuanian citizenship.
